Only two states, Montana and South Dakota, have more than 30 public schools per 10,000 students.

Public schools are essential in our society. They shape the minds of future generations, foster a love of learning, and prepare students for success in life.

In addition to academic instruction, public schools offer a wide range of extracurricular activities, such as sports, clubs, and arts programs.

The United States has a relatively large number of public schools compared to many other countries. However, the number of public schools per capita varies significantly depending on location, population density, and other factors.

An infographic from Playground Equipment shows which US states have the most and the fewest public schools per capita.

While every child in the U.S. has the right to attend a public school, that doesn’t guarantee each receives an equal education. Unfortunately, due to the lack of sufficient public schools in some places, some public institutions have larger classroom sizes, guaranteeing less one-on-one time with teachers.

The infographic comes with a chart that lists all US states according to the number of public schools per 10,000 students, population under 18, and total number of schools.

Plus, the US map shows the top 5 states with the highest and lowest number of public schools per capita.

Top 5 US states with the highest number of public schools per capita:

  1. Montana
  2. South Dakota
  3. Alaska
  4. North Dakota
  5. Wyoming

Top 5 US states with the lowest number of public schools per capita:

  1. Georgia
  2. Hawaii
  3. Florida
  4. Maryland

Here are the other findings from the infographic:

▸ California has the highest total number of public schools (10,325), followed by Texas (9,176) and New York (4,812).
