Which countries publish the most books (infographic)

|

A new infographic shows top countries by region, based on the number of registered ISBNs.

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. It’s a unique numerical code assigned to each book publication. This code helps in identifying and tracking books in the global marketplace.

The system was established in 1970 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It evolved from the earlier 9-digit Standard Book Numbering (SBN) system of 1966.

Which nations produce the highest number of books? Let’s have a look at the data from International Publishers Association (IPA), covering 76 IPA member countries – around 80% of the world’s population.

The Visual Capitalist has published a handy infographic that covers the top book-producing nations. It’s based on the number of ISBNs registered in 2022.

With nearly 3.3 million registered ISBNs, the United States is the world’s largest book market, publishing nearly four times as many ISBNs as Japan, which takes the second place.

South Korea has the highest number of publishers among the surveyed countries, with 75,324 publishers in the country.

Top 3 countries in Europe are: Germany (277 thousand registered ISBNs), UK (153 thousand), and Italy (140 thousand).
