Creative Commons are copyright licenses that are free of charge to the public. Instead of “all rights reserved” they are based on “some rights reserved” rule.
There are several types of CC licenses, each one with its own set of freedoms and limitations. To let content creators easier pick up the most suitable license, Creative Commons Poland has released a handy chart that compares six variants:
- Attribution – BY
- Attribution-ShareAlike – BY-SA
- Attribution-Noncommercial – BY-NC
- Attribution-NoDerivatives – BY-ND
- Attribution-Noncommercial-ShareAlike – BY-NC-SA
- Attribution-Noncommercial-NoDerivatives – BY-NC-ND
For example, the BY license allows you to share and create derivative works, also for commercial use, on one condition only – that you give it an attribution (link back to the original source, cite the author’s name, and work’s title).
Designed by Piotr Chuchla, the chart, originally released in Polish language as Plakat Licencje CC, was translated to English by Amit Agarwal from Digital Inspiration.
