A majority of Grammarly users who decided to take part in a poll, both men and women, voted for women in the four areas:

  • plot development,
  • pronouns & determiners,
  • characters,
  • sentences.

Women spend significantly more time developing characters. They are more likely to write about people than things. They prefer long, descriptive sentences.

Maddie Crum from Huffington Post points out that comparing women to men is irrelevant, but:

It’s a sad truth that ever since novel-writing was a thing, women have been using pen names to mask their gender lest their prestige or sales suffer.

One of the recent examples is Robert Galbraith, a pen name J.K. Rowling is using for her detective novels starring Cormoran Strike.
