Which size should I choose for my book? (infographic)

The infographic from the Book Designer gives a brief look at the standard book sizes that are common in the publishing industry.

If you are going to self-publish your book using one of the print-on-demand services, you will have to decide which size of the book you want to go with.

The infographic, that has just been released by my favorite Book Designer blog, takes a look at standard book sizes, together with the best categories.

The infographic accompanies an overview of the different book sizes (or trim sizes) available and recommendations for which one to use for your book.

Here are things to consider before selecting a trim size:

Cost – Larger trim sizes require fewer pages to print, which can save you money eventually. However, larger trim sizes may also be pricier to bind.

Audience expectation – Audiences are generally flexible when it comes to trim sizes. However, if you choose a trim size that is too different from the standard, your book may stand out from the crowd, but it may also be less likely to be picked up.

Word count – The thickness of your book will vary depending on the trim size you choose. For example, a 5 x 8″ book with 65,000 words will look much thinner than a 5 x 8″ book with 150,000 words. This can impact the design of your book.

Aesthetics – When your book is on a bookshelf, the spine is the first thing that potential readers will see. Choose a trim size that will create a spine that is aesthetically pleasing and will stand out from other books.

💬 Should you decide to jump outside of that box and go against the grain, at least you’ll have the confidence of knowing that you made an informed decision.

Here are the things to consider before selecting a trim size:

The book size you select may impact the printer you choose. Most printers handle the standard sizes, which are: digest, US trade, and US letter.
