Is Spotify actually a sensible place to listen to literature? With hundreds of thousands of audiobooks available, navigating them was always tricky. Now, natural conversations, smart prompts, and series trackers aim to reduce the friction.
When you open Spotify, what do you look for? Most of us open the app to play our daily music mixes or to listen to a favourite podcast. It is simply what we are used to doing.
Yet Spotify has quietly built a collection of around 375,000 titles, with more than 350,000 audiobooks included with eligible Premium plans, offering 15-hour monthly listening time.
However, many listeners are still hesitating to use it for literature, wondering if a music streaming platform really makes sense for books.
Are you on a shared Family plan as an extra member? Then you do not get those hours included, which is slightly frustrating. For listeners without Premium who only want books, there is also the standalone Audiobooks Access plan, giving you monthly listening hours without the paid music perks.
Access to the audiobook catalogue on Spotify depends on your subscription. If you have an eligible Premium plan – such as Premium Individual, or if you manage a Duo or Family plan – you get 15 hours of included audiobook listening each month.
Around 25,000 titles aren’t included in Spotify Premium plans. However, anyone – subscriber or not – can buy them directly on the web player. Non-subscribers can also purchase any of Spotify’s 375,000 total audiobooks individually.
To convince cautious readers to try audiobooks, Spotify platform has just announced three audiobook discovery features designed to help you find your next title faster.
Prompted playlists for literature
Do you know that feeling when you want a very specific story, but you do not know the exact title? Spotify is testing its Prompted Playlist tool on audiobooks.
The feature lets you describe what you want in normal everyday sentences. You can ask for something straightforward, like award-winning books adapted into films, or ask for a monthly calendar of short listens.
You can ask for straightforward lists, such as: “A list of books with adaptations from the last three years that are beloved or critically acclaimed.”
Or, get creative: “Make me an audiobook calendar. Start with the current month and pick one book per month, under 15 hours, that fits my listening habits.”
Spotify then generates a custom playlist based on your prompt and your listening taste. You can set these lists to refresh daily or weekly. It is currently rolling out in beta for eligible Premium users in several countries, including the UK and Sweden.
Just ask a Spotify AI chat
Searching with standard keyword boxes often feels slow and mechanical. To solve this, Spotify has introduced a conversational AI assistant where you can simply type or speak naturally.
Why browse endless categories when you can just ask a question? You can ask for a gritty Scandinavian crime novel set in Stockholm, or ask where a specific scene happens in a classic.
You can ask specific, contextual questions, like: “What Scandinavian noir should I listen to for my upcoming trip to Sweden?” or “Where does the Cyclops first appear in The Odyssey?”.
Because the assistant understands follow-up questions, you can adjust your requests dynamically. You can seamlessly move from asking about a book to asking for background music. This conversational chat is in testing for eligible adult subscribers in regions such as Ireland, Sweden, and the US.
Keeping the plot in long series
There is nothing more annoying than finishing a tense novel on a cliffhanger and having no idea what comes next. You usually have to stop everything and search online for the publication sequence.
Spotify now addresses this directly. When you complete an audiobook in a saga, the app immediately points you towards the next instalment.
Multi-part sagas now display clear series labels, alongside dedicated pages that show the complete reading sequence. You can also visit an author profile page to see all of their published series grouped cleanly in one spot.
It is a straightforward, sensible addition that cuts out unnecessary searching.

By integrating smart, conversational AI search, prompt-based playlist generation, and intuitive series tracking, Spotify is significantly reducing the friction that often comes with choosing a new audiobook. These updates ensure that you spend less time browsing menus and more time immersed in great narratives.
Will these discovery tools persuade regular readers to abandon dedicated audiobook apps? Maybe not overnight. But for casual listeners who already pay for monthly streaming, diving into a story has certainly become a lot less complicated.
