Reading among teenagers is declining (infographic)

Reading among teenagers - intro

30 years ago only one of four teens had stopped reading by age 17.

According to National Book Foundation, the percentage of this generation’s 9-year-olds who stopped reading by age 17, is almost 50%.

That’s why it’s increasingly important to encourage teenagers to read for fun. BookUp is a free nationwide program, with the goal to create not just a new generation of readers, but “a new generation of confident, engaged citizens.”

BookUp works since 2007, in low-income and minority communities. It’s led by award-winning local writers, and serves about 300 middle schooler per year. So far, within the program, students received over 25,000 books free of charge.

The infographic below describes in detail major challenges created by poor reading proficiency, as well as lists the most important benefits of reading.
