Public libraries lead the way to digital literacy thumb

Documenting the impact of public libraries in the digital age is more important than ever.

Following The Digital Inclusion Survey report, taken in autumn 2013 from a representative sample of US public libraries, American Library Association has prepared an interactive infographic that will surely boost the impact of the study.

A clear conclusion of the report, well reflected in the infographic, is that public libraries lead the way in providing technologies and digital content to communities.

Millions of people use these resources to enhance their digital literacy skills, and support education, employment, civic engagement, and health purposes. In doing so, public libraries are essential to building digitally inclusive communities.

What does digital inclusion mean? It brings together three major elements that provide opportunities for individuals and communities to succeed in the digital environment. They are:

  • high-speed Internet access,
  • information and communication technologies,
  • digital literacy.

The biggest challenge is to make patrons understand the benefits of advanced technologies, and let them take advantage of opportunities available through these technologies.
