Amazon adds a splash of color to the waterproof Kindle Paperwhite. The new variant borrows a new color from the latest Fire tablets and comes with a matching leather cover.

Are you waiting for the white Kindle Paperwhite? You will have to wait a bit longer, most probably until autumn.

Meanwhile, Amazon has a surprise for you. The company has quietly introduced a new color variant. First spotted by Good E-reader blog, the color refers to the water-resistance of the e-reader. It’s Twilight Blue.

Twilight Blue is one of the colors of the new Fire range. Most probably, Amazon is testing whether a multiple-color range strategy would work for Kindle e-readers the same way as for Fires.

Will Amazon introduce the rest of the Fire colors? Yes. It’s just a matter of time. The company has already launched three new color variants of the original Kindle Paperwhite leather cover: Twilight Blue, Sage, and Plum.

It’s worth noting that for the first time since 2007, the Kindle comes in a color that’s outside of a grayscale range: white, gray, graphite, and black.

On one hand, most e-readers are available in either black or white – and one would ask why is that so if you can color the plastic in any color you want.

On the other hand, Amazon has introduced colorful Fire tablets four years ago and the strategy must be working as the third wave of the color palette has been introduced with the launch of Amazon Fire 7 (2019) tablet.

The Paperwhite is best suited for a multiple-color strategy. Its edge-to-edge glass front leaves one other element to play with – the back cover. In the basic Kindle, you have a plastic bezel on the front as well. Getting the plastic in two colors (black front and colorful back) might look like a cheap solution.

Do you like the new Kindle in Twilight Blue or would you rather wait for a Sage or Plum version?

If you are determined to get the white Kindle Paperwhite, you may see it already before Black Friday 2019. Amazon will most probably redesign the back of all color variants by replacing the full logo with the smile icon, the same way as it’s done in Fire tablets and the newest entry-level Kindle released in 2019.
