The 2014 generation of Galaxy Tab 4, Samsung’s value tablets, has started selling in the US. Here are the tech specs, prices, comparisons, and pics.
The fourth generation of a popular family of affordable Samsung tablets is on sale today, after a week of pre-orders.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 can be bought at Amazon, Sears, Best Buy, OfficeMax, Fry’s Office Depot, PC Richard & Son, Tiger Direct, as well as at Samsung official website.
In a press release, Michael Abary, Senior Vice President of Samsung Mobile Computing, said: “This latest addition to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab family combines versatility with value” (via PC Magazine).
All three models have the same 1.2 GHz processor, 1.3MP front plus 3MP rear-facing camera, and 1.5GB RAM memory. Each model comes with over $300 of free content and services.
The display sports WXGA technology, with a 16:10 screen ratio. Compared to the previous generation, only the smallest 7-inch model has a better resolution (Galaxy Tab 3’s was 1024 x 600).
Two bigger models sell at lower introductory prices than last year’s generation – the 8-inch by $30, and the 10.1-inch by $50. The 7-inch Galaxy Tab 4 is priced exactly as its predecessor.
Having in mind that the new lineup is not much of the improvement, the lower prices are a fair offer. Price comparison between Galaxy Tab 3 and Galaxy Tab 4 is shown in a table below.

Update: On a launch day, the prices of two bigger models are already reduced on Amazon. The 8-inch, both in black and white, costs $239.99, instead of $269.99. The 10.1-inch model, both color versions, is now $319.99, a $30 drop from the list price of $349.99.
The prices of 8.0 and 10.1 Tab 4 were also lowered on Samsung website, except the black 8-inch version.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 was launched in US only. I’ve tried to order it from Poland, but couldn’t proceed to checkout due to geographic restrictions. We’ll surely share the news, once Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 will be released internationally.
According to PC magazine, four major US mobile carriers will start selling an LTE version of the tablet this summer.
It’s only eleven months since the launch of Galaxy Tab 3 in July last year. Samsung’s policy with entry-level tablets is to shorten the generation’s life cycle, instead of reducing prices.
During these 11 months, the price of the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 3 never got lower than $249, as indicated by the price tracker The Tracktor.

In general, don’t expect a considerable decrease in price of the Galaxy Tab 4 models. Prices may be reduced temporarily, so it’s good to follow the deals in your favorite online store, or track prices using the above mentioned The Tracktor.
When it comes to the looks, the new lineup is sleeker and resembles Galaxy Note, 2014 edition. The shape is curved any longer, only the corners remain rounded.
While proportions are quite the same, the only visible reduction in size was achieved in the 7-inch model. It’s by 0.9 mm thinner than its predecessor.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 is also considerably lighter than Tab 3 7.0. It weights 276 g – 28 g less than the earlier model. The 10.1-inch is also lighter, while the weight of 8.0 is actually bigger.

Comparing the dimensions shows that most of the Tab 3 covers with corner straps should work quite well with Tab 4 respective models. The same with sleeves and jackets.
However, no case that holds the device in place via the plastic shell won’t be definitely fitting the new models.
Although new models were announced few weeks ago, several producers of cases and covers have already created the new designs, Belkin leads the way here with several brand-new quality cases.

In conclusion, the new lineup is more of a refreshment to Galaxy Tab than a real upgrade. The only model that’s considerably better than its predecessor is the 7-inch one. It features a better screen resolution, and is considerably lighter and thinner than Galaxy Tab 3.
Samsung Galaxy Tabs 4 are the great, budget tablets for the new owners. Those of you who already own Tab 3 should find a really strong reason to replace it with the 2014 model.
