We live in times of the internet of things. Things such as a fridge can connect to the web and send messages.
Don’t you think that much more important than having a fridge tweeting about the temperature of the white wine is a chance to connect real people with real things?
Nowadays, libraries connect patrons not only with books but also many other things.
American Libraries Magazine has just released an infographic poster created by Terra Dankowski, an associate editor at American Libraries, and a Chicago-based designer and illustrator Brian Mead.
The infographic lists favorite items, some of them highly unusual, circulating at libraries across North America. Bird watching kits, microscopes, or Santa suits, are just a few of them.
Miguel Figueroa, the director of the American Library Association’s Center for the Future of Libraries, said: “Libraries were sharing before sharing was cool.”
Sharing books and other helpful things is the future of libraries. Because giving people access to things is cooler and more useful than giving things access to the web.
