Save with certified refurbished Kindles

Getting a refurbished Kindle is a good option to save money, when there is no special offer available for new devices.

One way to save on a device is to wait for a special offer. Sometimes the deal is big, sometimes not. Sometimes the deal comes when you consider buying a tablet or e-reader.

In most cases, however, when you really need to have a device (like at the beginning of a new school year) there is no other option to get a Kindle, but to buy it at a regular price.

You can always decide to go for a used one. Checking out a refurbished Kindle is a first thing to do.

A refurbished device is the one that has been returned by a customer, and tested by the seller or producer for functionality and defects.

Amazon selects only the devices that look like new, and ships them with a 1-year limited warranty – the same warranty that comes with every new Kindle.

How the refurbished process works

  1. Customer returns the Kindle to Amazon.
  2. Amazon restores the software to factory settings, tests if the device works properly, check out if there are any mechanical defects.
  3. The device has to look and work like new. Otherwise it won’t get certified and go on sale.
  4. The device is sold with a free 1-year limited warranty. Some models are also eligible for the optional 2-year extended warranty offered by third-party providers. You’ll find more info here.
  5. You can save up to 25%, and it’s due to the fact the almost-new device was pre-owned by another customer.

All certified refurbished Kindles, sold and shipped by Amazon, are available in the Kindle Outlet Store. Currently there are five Kindle Fire models on sale:

  • Kindle Fire HD 7″, WiFi, 16 GB, with special offers (previous generation),
  • Kindle Fire HD 7″, WiFi, 8 GB, with special offers,
  • Kindle Fire HD 8.9″, WiFi, 16 GB, with special offers,
  • Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″, WiFi, 16 GB, with special offers,
  • Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ 4G LTE, WiFi, 32 GB, with special offers.

When you’ll land on each model’s page, you’ll see that other versions are also refurbished. The listing in the Kindle Store Outlet is more of what Amazon suggests you to buy, than a complete list of available models.

The refurbished Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″, WiFi only with 16 GB of storage, costs $339. It’s $40 less than the new Fire in exactly the same configuration.

If you’re more interested in e-readers than tablets, there is a certified refurbished Kindle Paperwhite (with special offers) available for $109. Three other refurbished Kindle e-readers are on the way, and you can get notified by email when they arrive.

Savings are between 10% and 25%. One-fourth is the usual price reduction when a new (not pre-owned) Kindle gets featured on Amazon Gold Box.

When considering all the pros and cons of certified devices, I actually think that the condition of the device is not a problem.

The problem lies somewhere else. It’s older models that go through the refurbishing process. You can’t expect that newly introduced Kindle will be sold as refurbished immediately after the launch.
