On June 5, 2017, Apple announced the new generation of their high-end tablets: iPad Pro.

Two iPad Pro models were revealed: the smaller 10.5-inch and the bigger 12.9-inch. Both models were available for pre-order since June 5, and shippings start on June 12, 2017.

The most affordable version of the iPad Pro 10.5 (64 GB, Wi-Fi only) costs $649. You’ll have to pay $799 for the same configuration of iPad pro 12.9.

Most of the features of the new iPad Pro models are the same, so the only point of difference is the size of the screen.

It’s reflected in how Apple sells them: now there is only one iPad Pro model, and the screen size is an option to select, just like color, storage, and connectivity.

You can jump to the specific model right now:

Quite possibly, such a unification of tablet range will also include the basic line. Instead of “iPad Air” and “iPad Mini” we will just have the iPad. It’s what Apple already started with the 9.7-inch iPad (not Air), released in March.

When the successor of the iPad Mini comes, it may just become a smaller size option of the iPad range.

Let’s go back to the 2017 iPad Pro. As I already said, the devices share a lot of features, and below you’ll find the highlights:

Retina display with ProMotion

The Retina display was redesigned to include a feature called ProMotion.

ProMotion automatically adjusts the refresh rate to the movement of the content. The refresh rate goes up to even 120Hz (for instance, when you are drawing with Apple Pencil) and goes down (when you are reading an ebook). Thanks to that, power consumption can be considerably reduced.

Powerful A10X Fusion chip

The new 64-bit chip with six cores makes the 2017 iPad Pro tablets faster than most currently sold PC laptops. As a result, you can effortlessly play games, render 3D models, or edit 4K videos.

The new iPad Pro tablets deliver up to 30% faster CPU performance and 40% faster graphics performance than A9X chip from the 1st generation iPad Pro.

Integration with Apple Pencil

Now Apple’s original pen with work with iPad Pro even better, thanks to the deeper integration and the benefits of ProMotion.

Advanced sensors in Apple Pencil measure both pressure and tilt for natural drawing, annotating and note-taking.

The integration includes inline drawing in Notes or Mail, an easy signing of documents, or instant drawing from a Lock Screen.

Please note that Apple Pencil is sold separately. It costs $99.

Smart Keyboard

Again, this accessory is sold separately ($159 for the 10.5-inch iPad Pro) but was designed to seamlessly work with the high-end Apple tablets.

The benefit of having an original keyboard is that it doesn’t need to be charged, and paired with the iPad Pro via Bluetooth, as it connects via the Smart Connector. When you finish using it, you can easily fold it into a durable and protective Smart Cover.

iOS 11 ready

The new operating system of Apple’s mobile devices is coming in fall 2017, and iPad Pro tablets will make the most use of it.

The system will include multi-touch drag-and-drop, the new file management, and a redesigned app switcher. Plus new features supporting the use of Apple Pencil.

Apple iPad Pro 10.5 (2017)

iPad Pro 10.5 – details

When you compare the dimensions, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro is only 10 mm higher and 5 mm wider than iPad 9.7. It’s because the borders around the display were reduced by as much as 40%.

The newest iPad Pro is packed with a more advanced technology but has the same weight as the iPad 9.7. It’s also considerably thinner (6.1 vs. 7.5 mm).

It’s worth noting that iPad Pro 10.5 is the only model in the 2017 range that comes in Rose Gold color variant.

Prices start at $649, for the version with Wi-Fi and 64 GB internal memory. If you, however, want to make the most of the new iPad and would like to get dedicated accessories – Apple Pencil ($99) and Smart Keyboard ($159) – you’ll need to pay $907 for the cheapest version.

With the launch of the 2017 iPad Pro range, Apple introduced also the new Leather Sleeve. It’s made from a top-quality leather, comes equipped with a pocket for the Apple Pencil, and there are four colors to choose from.

iPad Pro 10.5 is available on Apple website, and from June 12 you can buy it in Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Resellers, and select carriers.

When it comes to international availability, June 12 is the launch date in the US and 37 other countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Russia, and Spain.

By the end of June 2017, the new iPad will be released in other countries and regions, including India, Turkey, UAE.

If you live in Brazil, Mexico, or South Korea, you’ll have to wait till July for the premiere.

iPad Pro 10.5 – comparisons

A natural choice for a comparison with iPad Pro 10.5 is Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, released at the end of March 2017.

Both devices are designed to seamlessly work with original pens. Opposite to Tab S3, you’ll have to buy the pen for iPad Pro separately, and it will cost you an extra $100.

Samsung Tab S3 comes with only 32 GB of internal memory, but you can expand it by 256 GB with a microSD card. Again, the tablet from Samsung is a more affordable option – for the iPad Pro 10.5 with 256 GB on board you’ll have to pay $749.

Taking aside the performance and operating system, if you’d want to get the iPad with the pen and 256 GB, you’ll need to spend around $850.

With the introduction of the 2017 12.9-inch Pro, older model disappeared from Apple website.

The set of accessories is the same as for the 10.5-inch version and includes an improved Apple Pencil, a Smart Keyboard, or the new Leather Sleeve with the Apple Pencil pocket.

Please note that the keyboard case designed for the first-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro is not compatible with the 2017 model.

If you are interested in the large-display tablet, you are surely considering the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The other tablet to take into consideration is Samsung Galaxy TabPro S 12 released at the beginning of 2016.

Both tablets can seamlessly work with dedicated pens and keyboards. The difference is that TabPro S 12 comes with a keyboard by default. You’ll have to pay extra $169 for the Smart Keyboard for the new iPad Pro.

A large screen is perfect for drawing, and you can use original pens with them. Both Samsung S Pen and Apple Pencil have to be bought separately.

As you’ll see in the table below, for the price of $800 you can have the iPad Pro, which has a bigger and better screen, but a smaller internal memory, and comes without the keyboard case.
