Which iPad mini 4 cases are compatible with the 5th-generation iPad mini?

iPad mini 4 and 5 have the same dimensions, but there are two details that make the old case incompatible. However, many cases could still be used.

Some of iPad mini 5 rumors were based on a leaked image of a transparent case that suggested that the 2019 model would have the same dimensions as the previous generation.

Therefore, some users we hoping that iPad mini 5 would be faster, more powerful, but still compatible with the case they had used on their current 4th-generation model.

It turns out Apple didn’t care about case compatibility, this time. There are two design elements that will make it hard to use your iPad mini 4 case on the 2019 model:

1. Volume buttons are slightly bigger

The buttons are placed exactly in the same position, but they are a tiny bit bigger than in the previous generation. If you have the case that was built precisely to fit iPad mini 4, you will find it difficult to put the old case on the new-generation model.

Ironically, the more precise the case, the less compatible it is with the 2019 model.

2. Microphone is in a different place

Even if you have the case that is using flexible frame to hold the iPad, you may still need to get the new one.

The microphone in the iPad mini 4 was located near the main camera. Unfortunately, it has been moved to top center position in the iPad mini 5. As a result, the mic will be covered by the old case making it impossible to use.

Obviously, if you were not using or are not planning to use the iPad mini with FaceTime, Skype or WhatsApp, you’d be fine with that.

The compatibility issue applies to cases that use a shell made from hard plastic. If you have the case made of flexible rubber, you may find out it is working just fine.

Also, if you accept the fact the mic will be covered, you can use the case that holds the iPad inside the flexible frame made of leather or faux leather. Such are book-style folio cases. There would be also no problem with cases that use corner straps to hold the iPad mini in place.

Fortunately, adjustments to be made in case design are pretty tiny. We’ve already managed to collect a great number of iPad mini 5 cases of all kinds. Which one is your favorite?
