The Associated Press reports that Amazon has started requiring authors to disclose if their work includes AI content in books they want to sell through its Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) program.
A new section, Artificial intelligence (AI) content (text, images, or translations), has been added to Amazon’s KDP content guidelines. It says:
💬 We define AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool.
The actual content is considered “AI-generated” even if you made substantial changes after using an AI-powered tool to create it (text, images, or translations)
It’s worth noting that Amazon is differentiating between AI-generated and AI-assisted, which authors do not need to disclose.
The new rules are an answer to a flood of AI-generated Kindle books (here is how to spot them), which became Kindle Unlimited’s essential problem.
For months, Amazon has been criticized by the Authors Guild, a U.S. organization representing writers, who argued that not requiring this disclosure could mislead consumers into thinking that they were buying books written by humans.
Amazon said that the new policy was a welcome first step toward addressing the concerns of the Authors Guild and other writers.
