Since the launch in 1994, Amazon has acquired as much as 42 companies. IMDb, Zappos, Woot, and Goodreads are on the list. Out of transactions with revealed conditions, the online giant paid most money for Zappos, Quidsi, and Kiva Systems. Each of these companies was worth at least $500 million.

If you want to find out which business areas Jeff Bezos is mostly interested in, check out the infographic put together by David K. Wolpert, the founder of content marketing company Swordfish Communications and Software Advice contributor.

While majority of deals were undisclosed, it’s worth noting that most of the companies acquired by Amazon in the past 15 years are in the books or digital books business. Taking into consideration 2013 alone, Amazon’s empire swallowed two companies: Goodreads, the largest book discovery network in the world, and Ivona text-to-speech software.

Other major acquisitions that helped Amazon’s book business grow, include Mobipocket, Lexcycle, Audible, and Shelfari, among others.

Is Amazon going to focus on digital content companies or rather get rid of direct competition? Wolpert has made for Software Advice an impressive analysis of companies that could be acquired by the online giant in the near future. Brands on the lists: Netflix, Staples, Best Buy, Pinterest, and Lionstage.

Readers of the Software Advice voted for Netflix as the most probable choice. What’s your vote?
