We need to change books, if we need books to change us

Books don’t make us better only in one case: if they are not available when we need them.

The world we are living is the world of now. I want a movie, I get a movie from Netflix. I want a game, I get a game from Google Play. I want to speak with my dad on the other side of the earth, I speak via Skype. I want a book, I get the book – and if it’s in digital form, it makes things much faster.

Our life is not only about speed. It’s also about space. It’s not a house, it’s not a room. Thanks to the Internet the entire planet fits into the computer screen. It would be really good if as many books as possible were a part of it, ready to be enjoyed in seconds.

The contract our brains sign with books is simple. We use them to be smarter. The more we use them, the smarter we are.

What do we give books in exchange? The love of printing ink smell? That’s not enough.

That’s why the change is needed – in a way books are helping our brains. We have to realize that for pixel-shaped minds, the bookshelf, even if it’s right under the desk, is fading away, day by day.

Books have to be closer and closer, and there is technology to make them closer and closer, but many of us neglect it for the sake of emotional attitude.

The worst thing to happen would be to keep books in a form invented by Gutenberg 600 years ago, while everything else is changing at the speed of the Internet connection.
