Being the youngest book town in the world is just one element of a coordinated effort to make Óbidos a literary center of Portugal, with a goal to become one of the most flourishing spots on the book map of Europe.
The most important event that’s designed to draw booklovers from around the world is Fólio International Festival of Literature.
The festival, organized by Óbidos City Hall, is being held for the second time, but it’s already the biggest literary event in Portugal.
The 2016 edition takes place between September 22 and October 2, 2016. This year’s theme is utopia, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first release of Utopia by Thomas More.
There are as much as 250 events planned for eleven days of the festival. Nobel Prize winners Salman Rushdie and VS Naipaul are among invited guests.
Óbidos is only 45 minutes by car from Lisbon, but a more convenient way to join the Fólio festival is to take a special train that leaves Lisbon’s Rossio Station every morning at 10:25.
