Writers love typewriters. So does Rio de Janeiro-based designer Álvaro Franca.

In 2013 he started to create portraits of his favorite writers he knew were working on typewriters. Each portrait was created entirely on AEG Travelier de Luxe S typewriter.
During his exchange in the Cambridge School of Art, Franca developed a special technique for imagining grayscale images on a typewriter.
As you’ll see in the pictures below, to achieve a darker tone, several letters were hit in the same place. Also, some letters were used to reflect highlights, and other letters for shadows.
The art series is called “Typewritten Portraits” and consists of six portraits. New ones are on the way.
On an awesome time-lapse video shot by Fernando Dias, you can see how Franca created the portrait of Jack Kerouac.
