A new report by the American Library Association shows efforts to censor 4,240 unique book titles in schools and libraries.
The American Library Association (ALA) is raising the alarm about a disturbing trend: a surge in book censorship attempts across the United States.
Their new report reveals a shocking 65% increase in the number of unique book titles targeted for removal from schools and libraries in 2023 compared to 2022. This marks the highest level of censorship documented by the ALA in its history.
What’s driving this censorship surge? The report identifies a troubling focus on silencing diverse voices. Nearly half of the challenged books (47%) explore the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC individuals.
The ALA emphasizes the importance of fighting back. They urge readers to join the “Unite Against Book Bans” initiative, a national movement dedicated to protecting access to information. By standing together, we can ensure libraries remain bastions of free speech and diverse voices continue to be heard.
This National Library Week, let’s celebrate the freedom to read and fight for the books that challenge, educate, and empower us all.
Mark your calendars! On April 8th, the ALA will unveil its highly anticipated list of the top 10 most challenged books in the U.S.
This, along with their full State of America’s Libraries Report, promises a deeper dive into the current state of censorship efforts and the crucial role libraries play in our communities.
