
Swiping through a story on a tablet seems convenient, but it forces your brain to work much harder. Recent report shows that reading physical manga saves mental energy and improves narrative comprehension.
Are you reading this on a screen right now? Ironic, I know. But stay with me for a minute, because your brain might actually be working harder than it needs to.
We keep hearing about the digital revolution in publishing. E-readers are convenient, sure. You can carry a whole library in your jacket pocket. But does your brain actually process stories the same way when you swipe instead of turning a page?
A recent study published in PLOS One decided to test this. Researchers took a close look at how people read visual narratives – specifically Japanese manga – on paper versus digital tablets. The results say a lot about physical books, e-readers, and how our minds work.
Physical vs digital manga: the experiment
The scientists used a clever setup. They gave participants stories split into two halves. The twist? Both halves described the exact same events, but from the perspective of two different main characters.
People read the first half outside a brain scanner, either on a good old paper book or a digital tablet. Then, they went into an fMRI machine – which is essentially a massive magnet that tracks blood flow to see which parts of your brain are working – to read the second half and answer questions.
Some questions were simple and only needed info from the first half. Other questions required people to combine details from both halves to get the full picture.
Reading on paper vs screen: what happens inside the brain?
Here is where it gets interesting. When people tried to answer the tricky questions that required connecting both parts of the story, their response times tell a clear story.
People who started reading on a tablet took significantly longer to answer. Why? Because their brains were working overtime. The neuroimaging showed that reading on a screen triggered extra, excessive activity in the language and problem-solving areas of the brain.
Specifically, the left frontal regions – the core engine for processing story structure and language – had to fire on all cylinders. The right side of the brain, which usually just acts as a backup support system, also had to jump in to help save their accuracy.
When people read on paper, those same frontal brain activations actually decreased. Their brains were relaxed. They did not need to push engine power to 100% just to figure out what happened in the narrative.
Why paper gives your mind an edge
So why does paper make reading so much easier for our brains?
It comes down to spatial anchors. When you hold a physical book or a manga volume, your hands and eyes get constant tactile and visual feedback.
You know where you are in the story because of the physical thickness of the pages on the left and right. You remember a plot point partly because of where it was positioned on a real, physical page.
Tablets strip all of that away. A screen page transition is flat, instantaneous, and identical every single time. Your brain loses those physical landmarks. When it is time to recall the story or connect complex narrative threads later, a screen forces your mind to recreate the map from scratch.
Paper gives you perceptual continuity. It lets you focus on understanding the plot and feeling empathy for the characters, rather than wasting brain power trying to navigate a flat digital space.
The psychological flex of reading physical books
We often view paper books as a romantic, slightly outdated preference. We talk about the smell of old paper or the nostalgic feel of turning a page. But this study shows it is not just nostalgia. It is neuroscience.
Reading on paper is a mental efficiency hack. It creates less cognitive strain, aids story comprehension, and helps your brain integrate complex information faster.
If you are trying to learn something difficult, immerse yourself in a dense narrative, or just unwind after a long day of screen work, picking up a physical book gives your brain a real break. You get better depth of understanding without taxing your neural resources.
Next time someone tells you that reading on a Kindle or an iPad is “the exact same thing” as reading a print book, you have scientific backing to disagree. Your paper preference is actually just your brain working smarter.

Manga reading on paper vs. digital devices: Prospective effects on core and supportive integration processes in the brain

Reading on paper reportedly improves story comprehension compared to its digital version, although the underlying neuroscientific mechanisms remain unclear. We used a format of Japanese manga stories as visual narratives told in halves, each of which depicted the same events from the different perspectives of two protagonists. We examined how the medium used to read the first halves, either on a paper book (Paper preparatory condition) or on an electronic tablet (Tablet preparatory condition), facilitated reading of the second halves for the memorized stories, which they read on an electronic display with continuous empathy ratings. Magnetic resonance scanning was conducted during the latter reading and during answering two sets of questions: Set 1 that could be answered after reading the first half alone, and Set 2 that required comprehension from both halves. Behavioral results showed prospective effects of reading manga stories on a paper book or an electronic tablet, such that the response times were prolonged in Set 2 for the Tablet condition. By comparing the results of Sets 1 and 2 with correct answers for each story, we found significant response time differences for the Tablet condition alone. Moreover, for the Paper condition, activations in the left frontal regions significantly decreased while reading the second halves, and those in the right frontal regions also decreased in Set 1. Furthermore, core left frontal activations were highest in Set 2 for the Tablet condition, while supportive right frontal activations correlated with individual accuracy rates in Set 2 for the Tablet condition, indicating that excessive integration processes support improved performances required by correct answers. The present results demonstrate stronger prospective effects of reading on paper books, such that linguistic and narrative-structural integration processes are facilitated and led to saved excessive activations.
