Usually, the international version of the new Kindle is being launched with some delay. Sometimes it’s a few days; sometimes you’ll need to wait a few months.
Things are getting better and better with every new launch. Just like in case of the 2nd-generation Kindle Oasis, the international version of the newest waterproof Kindle Paperwhite has been released with no delay.
What’s the thing with the international version? Isn’t it the same as the regular one?
What you have to know is that at amazon.com, the online store always offers two versions of each device, no matter whether it is a Kindle e-reader or Fire tablet:
- US version – it can be bought only by customers who live in the United States,
- International version – addressed to users who shop from abroad.
When it comes to hardware, the devices are practically the same. However, they are given different ASIN numbers (identification product numbers), so they exist as different items on Amazon – and the international version is much harder to find.
Another thing is that the international range does not include versions with special offers (which don’t make sense for foreign customers, anyway). Therefore, the prices of the entry-level variant are always higher – by the value of special ads.
We’ve searched Amazon for international versions of Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 4 (2018), and we’ve found two variants:
- Kindle Paperwhite 4 International – Wi-Fi, 8 GB – this is the cheapest version of the newest Paperwhite that’s available for foreign users of Amazon US store. Its price is set at $149.99 – $20 more than the US version because it does not contain special ads,
- Kindle Paperwhite 4 International – Wi-Fi + Cellular, 32 GB – the most expensive variant features the bigger memory, and cellular connectivity. It costs the same as the US version.
The newest Kindle Paperwhite 4 sports the same proven 6-inch 1448 × 1072 px E-Ink Carta touchscreen. Besides the display, everything seems to get changed.
The biggest new thing is that the new Paperwhite is waterproof. Meeting IPX8 rating, the new e-reader can withstand immersion in 2 meters of fresh water for up to one hour.
You can use the 4th-gen Paperwhite to listen to audiobooks, just like the entry-level Kindle and Kindle Oasis. The Bluetooth chip will enable you to connect headphones or speaker, and this is a way to output Audible audiobooks.
The next improvement is about memory. The 2018 Kindle Paperwhite offers two storage options – 8 and 32 GB – giving at least twice as much space for the user than the previous-generation Paperwhite.

How to find Kindle Paperwhite International
Even if you are browsing Amazon from abroad, and have an address set in a different country, Amazon won’t recommend you the international version of any of the devices, no matter whether it is Kindle Paperwhite, Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet, or Echo Dot smart speaker.
The easiest way to find out which variants are available for international customers is to use the search box. Try to be as specific as possible. Here are the results for a phrase: Kindle Paperwhite international version.
