The chart examines the careers of the selected authors, by listing the books they published, and at which age. It also highlights the breakthrough book of every author (look for the black bookmark icon).

To select the writers for the chart, Blinkbox Books used novels in the BBC Big Read and the Nielsen best-selling authors list 2001-14. Plays, poetry, children’s novels, and short stories were excluded. Also, authors who have written less than five novels, were not included in the final selection.

The most wonderful thing about the chart is that it’s interactive. When you visit the original page at Blinkbox Books blog, you’ll be able to find more details about the books. Simply mouse over the orange bar, representing a single year, and you’ll read how many books a particular author wrote this year, and which age she or he was at that time.

As you’ll see, the most prolific writer is Nora Roberts. In 2002, when she was 36, she published as much as 8 novels.

Douglas Adams became famous thanks to his debut novel, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Charlotte Brontë, J.K. Rowling, or Joseph Heller also became famous for their first books.
