Book Guns are the most notable work by the NY-based artist and mathematician Robert The. They have been collected in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.

The books were cleverly chosen to create an extra dimension between the meaning of words and the meaning of the gun. Among the books, we see The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, or Marshall McLuhan’s The Medium is the Massage.

The fight against ignorance is the basic interpretation, but Robert The’s thinking goes much further than that:

Books (many culled from dumpsters and thrift store bins) are lovingly vandalized back to life so they can assert themselves against the culture which turned them into debris.
