It’s been almost ten years since Amazon introduced the first-generation Kindle e-reader. One would expect the company to reveal a revolutionary product to mark such important anniversary.
The newest-generation Kindle Oasis 2017 has everything to be marked as revolutionary, especially that it finally offers the feature many Kindle fans have been impatiently waiting for.
Yes, the all-new Kindle Oasis is waterproof! The e-reader meets the IPX8 water resistance standard (similarly to the 2017 Kobo Aura H2O). It means it resists water better than iPhone 7 or Nook GlowLight Plus. Both devices are rated IP67 for dust and water resistance.
What does IPX8 mean? The bigger the number the better the water resistance. IPX8 means the device is suitable for continuous immersion in water, two meters deep, for under 60 minutes. Yes, you can leave it in your bathtub for an hour and nothing will happen!
On the more practical side, imagine going to the beach. The only source of tension would be the plot of the novel you’re reading. No more fear the sand will land on the screen – because you can wash it away immediately without damaging your Kindle.
The water resistance alone would not justify the high price of the new Kindle. The 2017 Oasis costs $249.99 (the version with 8 GB of internal memory and special offers). It’s almost twice as much as the price of Nook GlowLight Plus ($129.99) and $70 more than Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2 ($179.99).
Luckily, the all-new Oasis has more to offer than just being the first waterproof Kindle. There are a few more features when it’s first.
The 2017 Oasis is the first Kindle e-reader with the 7-inch high-definition screen. The larger E-Ink Carta display offers the same pixel density as in Kindle Paperwhite (300 ppi), what results in crisp, laser-quality text. More space means that over 30% words can fit into one page – compared to the 6-inch Kindle when the font size is the same. Thanks to that, you will need to turn pages less often. What’s more, Amazon claims that the refresh rate has been improved: “It has the fastest page turns of any Kindle e-reader.”
Another “first” is that Kindle Oasis 2017 comes with a built-in Audible. Some users may hope it means the new e-reader has the speakers and comes with a free Audible subscription. Hold on, that would be too much.
The device doesn’t have internal speakers. Instead, it’s equipped with a Bluetooth module to easily connect with Bluetooth-enabled headphones or speakers. The Oasis doesn’t offer a free-of-charge subscription of Audible. When you will order it, you will be able to try the Audible for free for one month, and decide whether you want to continue the subscription or cancel it.
So, what does the “built-in Audible” exactly mean? The 2017 Oasis is the first Kindle that is ready to play audiobook companions the same way as Kindle app on Amazon Fire. You can download the audiobook for the current book and then seamlessly switch between reading and listening, thanks to Whispersync for Voice.
Kindle Oasis is also Amazon’s first e-reader that comes with aluminum back. Compared to the predecessor which had a battery in a detachable leather cover, the new Oasis has a traditional approach – the battery is inside. And even with that, it’s extremely light. It weighs only 194 grams – 10 grams less than the smaller 6-inch Kindle Paperwhite.
On top of that, the new Kindle keeps what made the 2016 Oasis so attention-grabbing – asymmetric design. This design is intended to let you read one-handed for long-hours. On the larger side, there are dedicated page-turn buttons, so that the finger movement could be limited.
So, what you get is a waterproof e-reader with a larger 7-inch high-definition screen, ready to play audiobooks. And it costs $30 less than its predecessor.
Obviously, the $249.99 price tag refers to the cheapest version. The new Oasis comes with two storage options: 8 GB and 32 GB. The latter one makes it $30 more expensive. Worth considering when you have the Audible subscription and going to download many audiobook companions.
The most expensive version of Kindle Oasis costs $349.99 and comes with the 3G + Wi-Fi connectivity, 32 GB on board, and no ads.
The new e-reader will start shipping on October 31, 2017. You can pre-order it already. Amazon has developed two kinds of original cases: the leather one and the water-safe fabric one.
