In early May, this year’s edition of Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge has launched. The program was created to give schools and families an engaging – and completely free – way to encourage children to read during the summer.
The theme for this year’s edition is “Reading Under the Stars”, and is sponsored by Eveready, the producer of flashlights and batteries. Families will be encouraged to discover new and fun ways to explore reading outside.
Whether you are a kid, a parent, or an educator, you can join the program right away. Kids can get involved in setting a new reading world record. Last year’s participants set the record of 176,438,473 minutes read.
Parent will have a chance to explore free book lists, activities, and tips, as well as stay connected with the Reading Timer App. If you are an educator, you can enter for a chance to win 50 books.
Francie Alexander, Chief Academic Officer at Scholastic, says:
We know that the more children read, the more they succeed and time spent with books is especially important during the summer months so students return to school ready to tackle more challenging texts.
The infographic below was developed by the Scholastic designers to help parents easier find convincing ideas to get kids reading. Aim for 11 books, be a reading role model, and go beyond the book!
