Nook Tablet 7 (2016) – tech specs, comparisons, pics, and more

Nook Tablet 7 2016 infochart

Barnes & Noble introduces the most affordable Nook tablet ever, at $49.99.

After five Nook tablets developed in cooperation with Samsung, Barnes & Noble decided to offer for the 2016 holiday season Nook-only branded device with basic features and a competitive price.

The new device is simply named Nook Tablet 7 and costs as low $49.99. It’s the same as Amazon’s entry-level Amazon Fire 7.

Don’t expect too much from a device that’s under $50. Nook Tablet 7 offers 8 GB internal memory (expandable via microSD slot), 1024 × 600 px display, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow enhanced with the special interface designed to make buying and managing Nook content easier.

Some tech blogs say that Nook Tablet 7 has 5 MP rear and 2 MP front cameras, but this is not true. Someone have mistaken Nook Tablet 7 with the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab A Nook, and others copies the tech specs.

The only info about cameras on the Nook Tablet 7 product detail page is that there are two cameras: the front one is VGA, and the rear one is 2 MP.

Nook Tablet 7 was announced on November 16, and available for pre-order on Barnes & Noble’s website.

The official release date is set for Black Friday 2016 – November 25. On that day, the new Nook goes on sale in 638 Barnes & Noble stores across the US.

We have to keep in mind that Barnes & Noble launched the 7-inch Nook this year already. It’s Samsung Galaxy Tab A Nook 7.

Moving towards the low-cost device looks like a desperate step to compete with Amazon’s concept of the cheap tablet with full access to the powerful ecosystem.

The rush is seen in the availability of accessories. Unlike the tablets launched together with Samsung, there are only few cases for the 2016 Nook Tablet. To be precise, it’s two models (heavy-duty kids’ case and the book style cover) in a few colors each.

Nook Tablet 7 (2016) – comparisons

The only comparison that makes sense is against Amazon’s Fire 7 tablet introduced a year ago.

Both tablets are astonishingly similar when you look at tech details (see the table below).

Amazon Fire 7 has a version with a twice bigger internal memory, and comes in a few colors, what Nook lacks.

On the other hand, the new Nook is a bit lighter, smaller, thinner, and has a soft-touch back.

These two devices offer tech specs that were attractive a couple of years ago. Instead of analyzing what the devices lack, users who are willing to spend no more than $50 on a tablet should think about what the connected ecosystems offer.
