For the fifth time, Goodreads readers were asked to vote for best books of the year. Voting started in early November, and as much as 1,953,770 votes were left. It’s almost 800,000 more votes than last year!
Goodreads users were asked to select their favorite books in 20 categories, from fiction, to YA, to memoir to graphic novels, to poetry.

The winner in Best Science Fiction is Margaret Atwood with MaddAddam. Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane has won Best Fantasy with 43,534 votes, far more than the second title, A Memory of Light by Robert Jordan (13,021).
The new novel by Neil Gaiman was the most voted book this year. The second was The House of Hades by Rick Riordan, taking 42,877 votes (winner in Best Middle Grade & Children’s). Veronica Roth’s Allegiant came third, winning in Best Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction, and collecting 36,157 votes.
Usually, the end of the year is the time when lots of rankings are being announced. Goodreads Choice Awards is different from all the “editors’ choice” lists. The books are not selected by a committee of those who receive review copies, but hundreds of thousands of those, who buy the books.
