Here is another use for Drafts app – quick translations

Drafts for iPhoneI’m playing with the Drafts app for a few weeks now, and the more I use it the more I get addicted. Drafts can actually replace a lot of single-purpose apps that you don’t’ use very often and put inside folders on the iPhone and iPad.

Many readers of Ebook Friendly use English as a secondary language, and this trick should be helpful for them. Instead of firing up Google Translate or any other translation app, simply open the Drafts app, type the word in your language, and use the “Translate” action.

Below I’ll show you how to set up the action, but before that one remark about the translation. I’ve tested it on Polish words translated to English. It’s the usual situation when I need a quick translation. The URL action redirects me to the browser with Google search result including the typed word and the word “translate”. I used a Polish Google domain, and such a phrase is interpreted by Google as a translation from Polish to English. That’s why it’s possible to combine Drafts app with Google search results page, which – as you’ll see in the screenshot below – displays the translation directly, and in a distinct way.

Please let me know if you’d like to see the more advanced action that translates the keyword from any specific language to any other specific language.

How to set up a translate action in Drafts app

1. Open Drafts app, tap on Share icon, select Settings, and tap on URL Actions. Add a new action by tapping on “+” icon in the top right corner.

2. Name the new action, for instance “Translate”. In the URL field paste the line from below. Just remember to replace in the address the Polish domain (pl) to the one from your country.

http://www.google.pl/search?hl=en&q=[[draft]]+translate

If you prefer to open the link in Google Chrome, instead of Safari, paste this line:

googlechrome://www.google.pl/search?hl=en&q=[[draft]]+translate

3. Now, in the Drafts’ text field, write down a word for translation and from a list of available options select the action that you’ve just set up.

The results are seen in the screenshots below.
