12 sure-fire #ebook #bestsellers - autumn 2014

This autumn you won’t find long-awaited bestsellers, but the choice is good enough to please yourself and those you gift.

Last year everyone was waiting for Allegiant, the grand finale of the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth. Plus, Stephen King released Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining. We were waiting for it 36 years!

No such highly anticipated titles will be released before Christmas 2014, but many bestselling authors return with beloved characters from popular series.

James Patterson, together with Michael Ledwidge, wrote the seventh book in the Michael Bennett series. Nora Roberts comes back with Cousins O’Dwyer trilogy – the third book is called Blood Magick. In the middle of November, Captivated by You will be released. It’s the next book from Crossfire series from Sylvia Day.

A special enhanced edition of To Kill a Mockingbird will be published by HarperCollins. Following the launch of the ebook version of the legendary novel by Harper Lee, the enhanced edition will include extra materials you won’t find anywhere else.

My personal favorites are a memoir by Stephen Fry, More Fool Me, “a brilliant, eloquent account by a man driven to create and to entertain.” The next book I’m definitely going to buy is The Peripheral, the near future novel from William Gibson, the bestselling author of Neuromancer.

Books are presented with blurbs and direct links to Kindle Store, Nook Store, Kobo and iBooks Store. Not all books can be pre-ordered in all the ebookstores. This is actually a good thing. You can compare availability and prices before deciding which ebook platform to choose.

There is a day in autumn, when you look out of the window and say to yourself: “time to collect some books for long reading evenings.”

So, which of these titles are you going to download to your e-reader or book reading application?

More Fool Me - Stephen FryMore Fool Me

Stephen Fry

Release date: September 25, 2014

Stephen Fry invites readers to take a glimpse at his life story in the unputdownable More Fool Me.

In his early thirties, Stephen Fry – writer, comedian, star of stage and screen – had, as they say, ‘made it’. Much loved in A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Blackadder and Jeeves and Wooster, author of a critically acclaimed and bestselling first novel, The Liar, with a glamorous and glittering cast of friends, he had more work than was perhaps good for him.

What could possibly go wrong?

Then, as the 80s drew to a close, he discovered a most enjoyable way to burn the candle at both ends, and took to excess like a duck to breadcrumbs. Writing and recording by day, and haunting a never ending series of celebrity parties, drinking dens, and poker games by night, in a ludicrous and impressive act of bravado, he fooled all those except the very closest to him, some of whom were most enjoyably engaged in the same dance.

He was – to all intents and purposes – a high functioning addict. Blazing brightly and partying wildly as the 80s turned to the 90s, AIDS became an epidemic and politics turned really nasty, he was so busy, so distracted by the high life, that he could hardly see the inevitable, headlong tumble that must surely follow…

Containing raw, electric extracts from his diaries of the time, More Fool Me is a brilliant, eloquent account by a man driven to create and to entertain – revealing a side to him he has long kept hidden.

To Kill a Mockingbird Enhanced Edition - Harper LeeTo Kill a Mockingbird (Enhanced Edition)

Harper Lee

Release date: October 21, 2014

Harper Lee’s Pulitzer prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice in the deep south—and the heroism of one man in the face of blind and violent hatred, available now for the first time as an e-book.

One of the best-loved stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than thirty million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country.

A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father-a crusading local lawyer-risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime.

She had it once—for a moment—with Finbar Burke, but a shared future is forbidden by history and blood. Which is why Fin has spent his life traveling the world to fill the abyss left in him by Branna, focusing on work rather than passion.

Branna and Fin’s relationship offers them both comfort and torment. And though they succumb to the heat between them, there can be no promises for tomorrow. A storm of shadows threatens everything that their circle holds dear. It will be Fin’s power, loyalty, and heart that will make all the difference in an age-old battle between the bonds that hold their friends together and the evil that has haunted their families for centuries.

Revival - Stephen KingRevival: A Novel

Stephen King

Release date: November 11, 2014

A dark and electrifying novel about addiction, fanaticism, and what might exist on the other side of life.

In a small New England town, over half a century ago, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister. Charles Jacobs, along with his beautiful wife, will transform the local church. The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Reverend Jacobs—including Jamie’s mother and beloved sister, Claire. With Jamie, the Reverend shares a deeper bond based on a secret obsession. When tragedy strikes the Jacobs family, this charismatic preacher curses God, mocks all religious belief, and is banished from the shocked town.

Jamie has demons of his own. Wed to his guitar from the age of thirteen, he plays in bands across the country, living the nomadic lifestyle of bar-band rock and roll while fleeing from his family’s horrific loss. In his mid-thirties—addicted to heroin, stranded, desperate—Jamie meets Charles Jacobs again, with profound consequences for both men. Their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil’s devising, and Jamie discovers that revival has many meanings.

This rich and disturbing novel spans five decades on its way to the most terrifying conclusion Stephen King has ever written. It’s a masterpiece from King, in the great American tradition of Frank Norris, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe.

The Peripheral - William GibsonThe Peripheral

William Gibson

Release date: November 27, 2014

The Peripheral by William Gibson is a thrilling new novel about two intertwined futures, from the bestselling author of Neuromancer

Flynne Fisher lives down a country road, in a rural near-future America where jobs are scarce, unless you count illegal drug manufacture, which she’s keen to avoid. Her brother Burton lives, or tries to, on money from the Veterans Association, in compensation for neurological damage suffered in a Marines elite unit. Flynne earns what she can by assembling product at the local 3D printshop. She used to make more as a combat scout in an online game, playing for a rich man, but she’s had to let the shooter games go.

Wilf Netherton lives in London, seventy-some years later, on the far side of decades of slow-motion apocalypse. Things are pretty good now, for the haves, and there aren’t many have-nots left. Wilf, a high-powered publicist and celebrity-minder, fancies himself as a romantic misfit in a society where reaching into the past is just another hobby.

Burton’s been moonlighting online, secretly working security in some game prototype, a virtual world that looks vaguely like London, but a lot weirder. He’s got his sister taking over shifts, promised her the game’s not a shooter. Still, the crime Flynne witnesses there is plenty bad.

Flynne and Wilf are about to meet one another. Her world will be altered utterly, irrevocably, and Wilf’s, for all its decadence and power, will learn that some of these third-world types from the past can be badass.
