On September 8, 2016, Amazon announced All-new Fire HD 8 tablet.
The prices start from $89.99 for the 16 GB version with ads. Shipping starts on September 21.
When Amazon is using “all-new” to introduce the new device, it usually means a couple of minor improvements in the same bezel.
It’s not the case of Amazon Fire HD 8 (2016). The tablet has similar dimensions and looks almost the same as its predecessor, but offers a couple of essential improvements – at the cost of other features.
What has improved? Compared to Fire HD 8 (2015), the new tablet has two times the internal memory. The cheaper version comes with 16 GB instead of 8 GB. There is also the 32 GB version on offer.
In reality, in a 16 GB Fire HD 8, some 11 GB of memory is available to the user. You can, however, expand the memory via microSD card. The 200 GB cards can be used, by 72 GB bigger than in a previous model.
It’s memory what Amazon considers the most sought-after feature. With the price dropping from $149.99 to $89.99 for the cheapest version, there had to be some savings elsewhere.
Let’s have a look. The rear facing camera in the 2016 Fire HD 8 is only 2 MP, compared to 5 MP in the 2015 model. On the other hand, why would I need the good camera in a tablet, if I already have one in my smartphone?
There are two more downgrades. The new model features the Quad-Core processor, but it’s 1.3 GHz, not 1.5 GHz. Also, the new device is thicker than its predecessor. Its depth is 0.4 in / 9.2 mm, compared to 7.7 mm of Amazon Fire HD 8 (2015).
Were you hoping for a better, crispier display? Well, not this time. To bring the price down, Amazon decided to keep the same 1280 × 800 px screen from the 2015 model. Already a year ago, the screen with this resolution, although qualifying as HD, was a standard of the past.
Two more features should be put on the side of benefits.
Battery life has increased. Opposite to 8 hours of a predecessor, we now can enjoy up to 12 hours of reading, surfing the web, watching video, and listening to music. The Fire can be charged in up to 6 hours via the micro-USB power adapter.
The other good news is that Fire HD 8 (2016) is Alexa ready. The service will be available in the coming months.
Alexa is a cloud-based voice service that provides quick access to the entertainment you want, including music, games, audiobooks, and more. All you have to do is to press the home button and ask about what you want: check out weather, launch games, read audiobooks, or play music.
Concluding, if you are looking for a replacement, the 2016 Fire HD 8 is a good choice. If you are looking for an improvement, you should check out other 8-inch tablets.
