This is the way we should talk about ebooks [video]
People involved in ebooks – professionals, but also amateurs and enthusiasts like I am – more and more often assume that readers know enough and no longer have to be educated.
Ebooks are convenient and beautiful, no doubt about it. The only thing is that they are not simple. They will never be as simple as print books.
Certain level of education will always be needed. Even those who know a lot now will have to learn later. It’s the changing nature of technology: new updates of ereading applications, new user interfaces of ereaders, new terms of use from an ebook distributor – naming only the things related to ebook reading.
What’s more, majority of readers still haven’t embraced ebooks. 30% of people never thought about reading ebooks so far. What they need is an encouraging way to introduce the world of ebooks. It should be friendly. In most cases friendly means educational. Tips, how-tos, simple advice.
Those two videos, from Kobo and Google, have in my opinion a perfect tonality and message to let readers forget about prejudices and doubts.
When preparing a presentation for Polish publishers, I was looking for a video, which could challenge their attitude. And their attitude was: ebooks are dangerous, ebooks are complicated, ebooks are not an option. I used the Kobotorial. It was a shining part of the presentation (which was very positive in tonality, anyway).
Let’s educate readers about ebooks. And readers will discover their beauty.
