Top self-published books in Kindle Store – July 2011

The July report comes later than usual, sorry for that. However, it doesn’t affect the report as I changed the methodology since the June edition. I use monthly lists from Kindle Store’s Bestsellers Archive (now this section is called Past Bestsellers) instead of current ranking at the end of each month.

The July list is a first one after a comparative report on top self-published books in 2011, January-June. All monthly results will be added and compared in a full report for 2011. If you don’t want to miss it, get free updates here.

Overview

The most important conclusion in the January-June report was that after a couple of great months the general standing of self-published books was down in June to a January level – the time before the media got excited with Amanda Hocking and John Locke.

The biggest question was: is the downward trend going to continue or will we observe the increase. The July is a tiny bit better than June. There are 17 self-published books in Top 100 (compared to 16 in June), out of which 9 are in Top 50 (8 in June).

The No. 1 author is Michael Prescott, with 4 books on the list, much improving his position from previous months. His Stealing Faces is the best-ranked self-pubbed title – being the 9th most sold Kindle book in July. Barbara Freethy is also doing well, with 3 titles in Top 100. Her self-published ebooks are priced well above $3 and selling very well as she is an established, best-selling author.

New authors on the list are Rick Murcer (with 2 books), Darcie Chan, Emma Jay and Jaden Skye. It’s worth mentioning that John Locke is back – with a new title from the Donovan Creed series – The Love You Crave.
